Antique Japanese Sumitsubo Marking & Layout Tool (Body Only) Nomi Red Oak Mizuya It is painted with littleAntique Japanese sumitsubo are essential tools for Japanese wood working and joinery. They work just like a chalk line in western carpentry but with sumi ink instead. This listing is for the body only. Waded up cotton soaked with sumi ink is placed in the ink pot (the bowl part), the string is then drawn though the ink soaked cotton from the spool on the back. The now inked string is pulled taught and snapped and reeled back in, just like a chalk
