When I began the painting

the rustle of costumes and hum of gossip punctuated by stage calls and distant applause

So the painting became about love - motherly love or love from the universe

Stylistically it is pure Camberwell School of the period and if I were a betting man I would back three young students of the day–Christopher Pemberton

Gordon’s solo shows were a fixture during the early years of P & H and we were touched and honoured that an artist so much in demand at the time allowed us to represent him south of the border
