The carving is intricately carved in Chinese yumu (a type of elm) wood. This carving was once incorporated into a much larger piece of furniture like a wardrobe or bed. During the Chinese cultural revolution most of these fabulous carvings were destroyed. Some were saved and warehoused until recently.
