The forty songs on poems by Eduard Mrike were composed between 1948 and 1949 and represent the epitome of Schoecks art. Schoeck divided his cycle into five sections: Nature, Love, Observation, Belief and Reminiscence. It was first performed on 25 April 1949 in Stuttgart by the composers wife Hilde, accompanied on the piano by the composer
