Antique Japanese Meiji Era c1910 Suzuribako Calligraphy Chest Kiri Wood Tansu 14" POSIM This is Vintage Chinese woodenThis is a Japanese antique late Edo Era (1850) Japanese suzuribako. This suzuribako (portable calligraphy tansu) has three drawers, made of solid kiri wood (Paulownia). The metal hardware is hand forged iron. Suzuribako were used as portable accounting chests (the forerunner of the attache' case). Also known as a calligraphy chest as it housed an ink stone, brushes, ink stick, and paper.
