Trimethoprim prevents the reduction of dihydrofolate to tetrahydrofolate, while sulfamethoxazole inhibits the conversion of para aminobenzoic acid (PABA) to dihydropteroate. This synergistic effect produces maximum antibacterial activity, which is usually bactericidal.
