This is shown as "Enpo 3 (延宝)" or the 3rd year of the Emperor Reigen (霊元天皇) who ruled from 1673 to 1681
They work just like a chalk line in western carpentry but with sumi ink instead

Showa era or mid to late 20th century. This bowl was hand thrown, hand painted, and high fired for lasting durability. This chawan measures approximately 5" in diameter by 3" tall. Having been in carefully stored or very lovingly use, it remains in very fine condition.
