Working at the turn of the twentieth century, Koson refined the Ukiyo e tradition just as Japan moved from the Meiji into the Taish era, blending inherited woodblock techniques with a fresh, naturalistic eye. In this composition, tall blades of green frame elegant iris blooms in soft blues and luminous whites, their
