ホンマは、日本を拠点に活動する現代写真家の中で最も重要な人物の一人である。東京の郊外、都市部、その周辺の風景、そしてそこに居る人物のニュアンスを写真で描き、故郷である東京を優しくも思慮深い言説をもって探る。これまでに多くの写真集を刊行しており、1999年には作者の代表作であり傑作とも謳われている『東京郊外 TOKYO SUBURBIA』（1998年光琳社刊）と同作に伴うプロジェクトで第24回（1998年度）木村伊兵衛写真賞を受賞している。
