The decoration technique is inspired by the traditional batik craft: First, the text is applied to the mugs with wax. Then a thick, silky matt black glaze is applied to the mugs. During the subsequent firing, the black glaze solidifies and the wax melts away, so that the text appears in white and is recessed due to the thick glaze application, thus appearing like a relief.
