Constructed of silvered bronze, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, the obverse bearing a raised leftward facing profile of Grand Duke Friedrich II, circumscribed by name and title, the reverse bearing a raised inscription of FR VERDIENST (FOR MERIT), within a circular oak leaf wreath, the obverse maker marked RM for Rudolf Mayer,
