The distillery has a storied history, having been largely inactive in the early 20th century after being mothballed in 1900 due to the collapse of a major Scotch Whisky purchaser. It was reopened again in 1965, but remained struggling until 2004 when it was acquired by an independent consortium. This new ownership, led by Scotch expert
